This head-turning handbag references Antonio Canova’s (Italian, 1757–1822) Perseus with the Head of Medusa (1804–6), a monumental sculpture in The Met collection. It celebrates the Greek hero Perseus’s victory over Medusa, the monstrous mythological Gorgon feared for her hair made of snakes and her deathly gaze that turned anyone she looked at to stone.
